Expanding: A Valentine Story in One Chapter Some Day in the
Future "Oh man!
I gotta pee. I gotta
pee. I gotta pee. Lucas, I gotta pee!" "Yeah, Sami,
I think you told me once or twice. But what can I do?" he
grinned. "Some
Valentine's Day, huh? Here we are spending our first Valentine's Day
together in a cold, sterile hospital room. And to make matters worse, I
really have to pee." Sami smiled that smile Lucas had
fallen in love with. He walked over to
where she sat on the hospital bed, embraced her hands with his own, and
leaned into her, placing his chin gently on her curly blonde head.
"Ah, Sami, this is the best Valentine's Day ever! And you
know that. There isn't a thing in the world I'd rather be doing." "Me, either,
Lucas. Me, either. I'm happy we're here." Picking his head
up, Lucas softly kissed Sami's forehead, trailed
kisses down her nose, and stopped at her mouth, where the kisses became more
passionate. Pulling her hands free, Sami reached around and started
messaging his buttocks. "Oh, Lucas . . ." "Ahem!"
a voiced coughed. "Oh, Dr. Bercovitch! We were just .
. uh . . ." Sami stammered. "You don't
have to explain to me what you were doing. I mean it was doing stuff
like that that led you to my office in the first place." The
doctored laughed. "Besides, is there really a better place to be
on Valentine's Day than here? You'll always remember this
holiday." "I think
Lucas and I agree with you. We wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the
world, would we, Lucas?" "That's for
sure. I can't imagine being happier doing anything else or being
somewhere else." Tenderly, Lucas reached across Sami's back and rested his arm upon her shoulders. "Well, are we
ready? Are you two ready to find out . . ." "Oh my God!
We are so ready!" Sami interrupted. "OK, Sami lie back. While I cover your legs and under
your stomach with this towel, can you pull up your shirt to just under your
breast line. Yeah, that's perfect. Now, I'm going to put the gel
on your stomach. I want you to be prepared because it's going to be
cold." Lucas stood by Sami's side and clinched her hand in his. "Ooooh! Sami flinched.
"That is cold!" As Dr. Bercovitch spread the gel over Sami's
expanded stomach, she asked, "So, have you two decided if you want to
know the sex of your baby?" "Yes!"
the couple said in unison. Lucas continued,
"We already have one child. He's seven now. We want to tell
him if we're going to get him a baby brother or baby sister. Will wants
a sister, but we'll be happy either way. We just hope she's
healthy." "Lucas!"
Sami feigned surprise. "She?"
the doctor questioned. "I thought
you said it didn't matter." She grinned mysteriously as the rubbed
the doppler around all parts of Sami's
midriff. "Just a slip of
the tongue," Lucas said. "Just an honest slip of the
tongue." He couldn't keep a smile from plastering across his face.
"Well, I hope
you like surprises," Dr. Bercovitch announced.
A concerned Sami responded first, "Why? Can't you tell?
I'm almost six months along. Shouldn't you be able to tell?"
“Doctor?"
Lucas's inflected voice questioned. He leaned down closer to Sami
and put his head next to hers. "Are we having a little girl?"
"Well, yes,
you are! In fact, you're going to have three little girls!"
Their eyes widened
and joy broke out on their faces. "Oh my God,
Lucas!" © 2003 Mary Beth |
